Urban sprawl is a phenomenon whereby a city spreads beyond its initial territory. It is occurring in major cities throughout the world. Typical habitats found in large peripheries are either residential suburbs, where one finds residents with the financial means to live in comfortable houses (but which are not located in city centers), or slums occupied by residents without financial resources along large urban peripheries. The phenomenon of urban sprawl poses enormous transportation and mobility problems in a space where, because of the population’s density, creating public transportation is rarely profitable.
