Since 1977, the right to housing has been enshrined in the Constitution – Article 27.

2c. The State must establish a socialist democratic society in Sri Lanka whose objectives are: the attainment by all citizens of a standard of living suitable for themselves and their families, including adequate food, clothing, Housing, the continuous improvement of living conditions and the total enjoyment of leisure and social and cultural opportunities.
