TOUR OF THE HABITAT WORLD SEEN BY CIVIL SOCIETY

Touristification

Dernière mise à jour le 27 September 2019

The spread of tourism throughout the world is leading to a transformation of tourist destinations for all countries, regions and cities wishing to receive part of the manna provided by world tourism. This process of tourism development is more perceived as economic (financial contributions) and spatial (transformation of the place) while it also affects, if not more, the society and populations of the territories concerned.

The expression “tourism development” thus appears as a kind of “semantic enchantment” aimed at approaching a process that is much more complex than its reduction to an economic, spatial or even marketing dimension. How can we understand the development of tourism in scientific discourse, particularly in the field of urban tourism? Three scientific components are proposed: on the one hand, an analytical reading of French-speaking writings on tourism development compared to English-speaking writings; on the other hand, a semantic analysis of definitions of tourism development in the city obtained from French-speaking researchers (Europe, Canada, North Africa); finally, the model definition obtained through semantic analysis is revised in the context of English-speaking writings on the transformation process of places for tourism purposes.

Social movements for the right to housing are increasingly militating against touristification, which is a form of financialization of land and housing that deprives them of access to land and housing. The session of the International Court of Expulsion organized by the International Alliance of Inhabitants in 2017 in Venice aimed to highlight these practices. Thus, the inhabitants of Venice no longer have the means to reside there following the city’s touristification process. https://por.habitants.org/tribunal_internacional_dos_despejos/sessoes/6a_sessao_2017/em_setembro_em_veneza!_capital_mundial_dos_que_resistem_aos_despejos_causados_pelo_turismo/(language)/fre-FR
